The Art of Tattooing textbook was written by multi-disciplined artist Joshua Andrews, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 2001 and revised over the next few years..

Joshua came to writing his books when he was invited to be an apprentice tattoo artist in the late Nineteen-Nineties to early Two-Thousands. He recognized that all of his tattooing teachers spent a large amount of their time schooling their apprentices in many topics and matters that could be mastered by the apprentices on their own time; If there was just an apprentice artist's textbook for them to take home, thus saving the tattoo artist's time and effort.

The only book available at the time was Huck Spaulding's A-Z of Tattooing, and it was expensive and not easily available outside of the United States of America at that time. The need for a text book that had more ideas and techniques was apparent.
